About Arun Retreats

Arun Retreats is set on a private estate in West Sussex, approached by a drive two thirds of a mile long, and surrounded by beautiful unspoilt countryside. The fields roll on forever, the River Arun winds its way merrily through the valley; close by are Amberley Castle and Amberley Village - one of the prettiest in England. A little further afield there are country pubs, family attractions and activities, historic houses, beaches, and attractive market towns to browse. This all comes together to make Arun Retreats a brilliant destination for group holidays and short breaks in the UK.

Timberley House

Timberley House is a luxury large group holiday house that stands in private grounds, with panoramic views of Amberley Castle, the Arun Valley and the South Downs. With its fantastic features including a heated pool, movie room and games room, this is a very special place to stay for big happy holidays and peaceful celebrations in West Sussex. It’s a house for all ages that offers a true country house experience, with heaps of space inside and out.

It’s also a house that comes with history and heritage; a Grade II listed former farmhouse, Timberley House was built in 1815 and extended in the 1960s. Wind back 400 years and although we can’t be sure where the farm house stood or what it looked like, Timberley estate is mentioned on a Court Roll of 1415*, when it was recorded as ‘Timberle’ (timber + lea). At this time, part of the land, known as ‘The Shut’ was divided into strips worked by several local farmers – the Medieval Strip System or Open Field System that was a common practice at that time.

Estate surveys held in Arundel Castle archives show that Timberley was a tenanted farm owned by Charles Howard, Duke of Norfolk (1746-1815). The present-day spelling of Timberley was in use by 1795.

Wander through the rooms and you’ll notice that much of the original Georgian character remains - the high ceilings, timber sash windows, wide skirting boards and feature fireplaces. It makes such a wonderful backdrop to your group stay. It’s a house that exudes a charming and relaxed ambience; a place that’s so perfect for special times with special people. Make unforgettable memories when you stay at Timberley House.
